Upon returning home, I went on an archaeological dig through my books and it’s now sitting on my desk. That got a laugh, and I have to admit, that book was on my shelf the entire time I was growing up, but I’ve never actually read it. ![]() ![]() It screened for the Traverse City Film Festivalfounders, and prior to the movie, Michael Moore noted that the audience was probably familiar with the story because we’d no doubt read the book … “if you’re old…” I had the opportunity and great privilege to see “Kon-Tiki” at the State Theatre today. ![]() ![]() ![]() Surviving will take all the resilience and inner belief of this brave girl to turn their world around. ![]() Her parents said this would be a better life for them all, but it feels like the worst and most heart-breaking experience of Meixing's entire existence. Meixing finds herself trapped within the shrinking walls of Big Scary. Her fragile universe is rocked when tragedy strikes and Ma Ma refuses to face the world outside. Her solace is a glasshouse in the garden that inexplicably holds the sun and the moon and all the secrets of her memory and imagination. ![]() She is embarrassed by the second-hand shoes given to her by the kind neighbours, has trouble understanding the language at school, and with fitting in and making new friends. Everything is vast and unknown to Meixing and not in a good way, including the house she has dubbed Big Scary. The book was made into the 1969 film, The Illustrated Man, starring Rod Steiger and Claire Bloom. The man's tattoos, allegedly created by a time-traveling woman, are individually animated, and each tells a different tale.Īll but one of the stories had been published previously elsewhere, although Bradbury revised some of the texts for the book's publication. The unrelated stories are tied together by the frame story of "The Illustrated Man", a vagrant former member of a carnival freak show with an extensively tattooed body whom the unnamed narrator meets. It was nominated for the International Fantasy Award in 1952. A recurring theme throughout the stories is the conflict of the cold mechanics of technology and the psychology of people. The Illustrated Man is a 1951 collection of 18 science fiction short stories by American writer Ray Bradbury. ![]() |
